2021 was another volatile year for the commodities. The aftermath of Covid-19 lockdowns and supply chain issues were devastating on many economies. This usually forebodes rising prices in the commodities, which is evident from the numbers. However certain commodity groups performed poorly under these conditions.
I took 18 commodity groups and reviewed their prices at the beginning of the year and compared them to their prices today. I took the data from Yahoo Finance and Trading View. Here are the results:
The winner of this year is clearly Coffee with a whooping 116.2% increase in its prices since January! In fact all agricultural products saw a significant increase with the exception of Orange Juice, which fell 1.1% and Cocoa which fell 0.6%.
The metals on the other hand is another story. Palladium is the loser of this year, it lost about 17% of its value since the beginning of this year. It is safe to say that Gold and Silver too performed poorly this year with losses of 0.5% and 8.9% in their values respectively.
