10 Great Roman Places to Visit

The Roman Empire left so many magnificent sites that still stand to this day and give us an insight about the daily lives of the Romans. The following 10 places inherited from the Romans are a few of my favorites:

#1 – Colosseum (Italy)

The Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world today despite its age. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD.

Although substantially ruined because of the earthquakes and stone-robbers the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and was listed as one of the New Wonders of the World.

#2 – Pompeii (Italy)

Pompeii was an ancient city located in what is now the commune of Pompei near Naples, Italy. Pompeii along with herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area was buried under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of mount Versevius in AD 79.

#3 – Ravenna (Italy)

Ravenna was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from 402 until the empire collapsed in 476. It then served as the capital city of the Ostrogothic Kingdom until it was re-conquered in 540 by the Byzantine Empire.

Although it is an inland city, Ravenna is connected to the Adriatic Sea by the Candiano Canal. It is known for its well-preserved late Roman and Byzantine architecture

#4 – Ephesus (Turkey)

Ephesus was a city in ancient Greece on the coast of Ionia. It was built in the 10 century BC during the Classical Greek era and it was one of twelve cities that were members of the Ionian League. The city came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC.

The city was famous in its day for the nearby Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC) which has been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its many monumental buildings included the Library of Celsus and a theatre capable of holding 24,000 spectators.

Ephesus as part of the kingdom of Pergamon became a subject of the Roman Republic in 129 BC.

#5 – Aphrodisias (Turkey)

Aphrodisias was a small ancient Greek Hellenistic city in the historic Caria cultural region of Western Anatolia, Turkey.

White and blue grey Carian marble was extensively quarried from adjacent slopes in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, for building facades and sculptures. Marble sculptures and sculptors from Aphrodisias became famous in the Roman world. Many examples of statuary have been unearthed in Aphrodisias and some representations of the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias also survive from other parts of the Roman world.

#6 – Sbeitla (Tunisia)

Sbeitla is a small town in Tunisia, which is nearby the Roman ruins of Sufetula containing best preserved Roman forum temples in Tunisia. It was also the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa.

#7 -Piazza Armerina (Italy)

Piazza Armerina is a Sicilian town, site of the famous Roman villa of Casale, once the palace of the emperor Maximian (r.285-305 and 306-308).

The palace of Maximian is famous for its late-antique mosaics, which were made by several workshops that are easily to recognize even within a single room. Together, the mosaics cover over 3,500 square meters. The villa was in use until the twelfth century and is today recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site.

#8 -Hadrian’s Wall (United Kingdom)

Hadrian’s Wall is a former defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia begun in AD 122 in the reign of the emperor Hadrian. Running from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solwey. The wall covered the whole width of the island. In addition to the wall’s defensive military role, its gates may have been customs posts. The wall is the largest Roman archeological feature in Britain and it runs a total of 117.5 kilometers in Northern England.

#9 – Petra (Jordan)

Petra, originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu, is a historic and archeological city in Jordan. The area around Petra has been inhabited from as early as 7,000 BC.

Petra fell to the Romans who annexed Nabataea and renamed it as Arabia Patraea. Petra’s importance declined as sea trade routes emerged and after an earthquake in 363 destroyed many structures. In the Byzantine era several Christian churches were built, but the city continued to decline and by the early Islamic era it was abandoned except for a handful of nomads. It remained unknown to the West until it was re-discovered in 1812 by Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

#10 – Bath (United Kingdom)

Bath is the largest city in the country of Somerset, England, known for and named after its Roman-built baths. The city became a spa c. 60 AD when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the Rivor Avon, although hot springs were known even before then.
